O. O. Pershukova Motivation of students’ of non linguistic universities in learning English as a pedagogical problem

https://doi.org/10.31174/SEND-PP2019-208VII85-09

Abstract. In the age of globalization, the ability to use a foreign language is one of the essential conditions for competitiveness of higher education institutions graduates’ in Ukraine. On the background of reducing the number of classroom hours and increasing the amount of independent work, one of the conditions for successful learning is the students’ interest in the process of language learning, their desire to make efforts and devote time to this activity. Motivation (according to I.Zimnaya) is considered as a set of various psychological factors that determine human behavior and activity. Therefore, the formation of educational motivation is a complex pedagogical process in which both its components and all participants are important. The essence of motivation for teaching English to students in non-linguistic universities lies in the students’ interest in the subject of study raising, their willingness and desire to master English as a global language of science and technology,  a  mean  of  international  and  intercultural  communication.  Such  interest  promotes  concentration,  stimulates  and  encourages students’  attention.  Motives  based  on  students’  interest  are  the  source  of  their  activity.  An  important  factor  to  form  a  stable  positive motivation of students’ activity to study is the correspondence of the content of the study and the ways of its transfer to students’ interests and cognitive needs. The content component of learning and the ways how activities are organized are of great importance. Therefore, the selection  of  appropriate  educational  materials,  their  creative  nature,  and  connection  with  the  future  profession  are  influential.  Collective forms that require the creation of a problem situation should be used; it will be the impetus for communication within the group. To enhance the students’ thinking and practical activity, to improve their personal and professional development,  active teaching methods should be applied using modern teaching aids. The task of the teacher is to create the optimal learning environment, to help the student to understand the purpose of learning, to increase his self-esteem and belief in his strength. It is important to control the learning, the student should be informed about the results of the work to feel his/her growth. Quality assessment and error correction should be carried out  as tactful as possible. To maximize students success, it is necessary to convey to them that learning English is now personally meaningful for them, that is why  the  ability  to  learn  independently  is  of  great  importance.  The  teacher  can  significantly  contribute  to  the  development  of  student motivation by teaching them to use reference materials, various sources of information to form the ability to obtain information and use it.
