L. V. Knyshevytska, N. P. Bezpalova Teaching Reading Strategies as the Key to Academic Success

https://doi.org/10.31174/SEND-PP2019-188VII77-07

Abstract. In recent years, universities place a more heavy emphasis on developing the ability of ESL/EFL students to read specialized authentic academic texts in order to be successful in the programs of study. In this light, raising awareness of cognitive and metacognitive strategies that the students can use in completing their reading assignments seems to be of crucial importance. The present study examines cognitive and metacognitive reading strategies of EFL students. The data for this study were collected by means of a reading strategies survey. The correlation analysis and t-tests demonstrated that gender correlates with the use of cognitive and metacognitive reading strategies. The results of the findings revealed that, in general, females used slightly more often cognitive and metacognitive reading strategies than males. The study clearly indicates the need for teaching and raising awareness of cognitive and metacognitive reading strategies of the ESL/EFL students as the ones directly involved in cognitive processing of the academic reading materials. In addition, the study generally showed that gender influences selection and use of reading strategies. This fact could have implications for successful reading group activities where both genders would complement each other in the application of text processing skills.

O. M. Vasiukovych The pedagogical conditions classification for the effective formation of the future air traffic controllers’ professional readiness to conduct radio exchange in non-routine situations

https://doi.org/10.31174/SEND-PP2019-188VII77-15

Abstract. The article deals with the specific pedagogical conditions for the effective formation of the future air traffic controllers’ professional readiness to conduct radio exchange in non-routine situations. The first educational condition is motivation of students to acquire knowledge and skills in radio exchange in non-standard situations through learning technology to conduct radio exchange, including  gaming  and  interactive  technologies;  information  and  communication  technologies;  technologies  of  problem-based  and cooperative learning, and others. The second condition is combination of the content of professional and foreign language disciplines in the professional training course for future air traffic controllers. As it has been established, cross-disciplinary integration facilitates formation  of  integrated  professional  knowledge,  skills  and  abilities  in  future  air  traffic  controllers  to  conduct  radio  exchange  in English in non-routine situations. The third educational condition is taking into account the ICAO objectives and standards for the language training of air traffic control personnel. The language training of future air traffic controllers is obligatory to comply with the  standards  and  recommended  practices  of  the  International  Civil  Aviation  Organization  (ICAO)  and  foresees  training  to  be organized by communication-oriented technology directly related to working situations and professional communication of future air traffic controllers and pilots. The process of the formations of professional readiness in future air traffic controllers to conduct radio exchange in non-routine situations expects students to be immersed in simulated professional air traffic control activity, and that is the fourth educational condition. The use of simulated learning technologies enables the teacher to create communicative situations closely reproducing real communication.
