O. A. Tymchyk Religiosity as a factor of cross-cultural management

https://doi.org/10.31174/SEND-HS2018-156VI26-12

Abstract. The article is dedicated to the problem of necessity to consider the religious factor in cross-cultural management at the micro level – in the management of different kinds of organizations. The answer to this problem can be ambiguous because of the decrease in the number of religious people and in the influence of religion on the life of society. But, nonetheless, the number of religious people still remains high enough. In addition, the factor of population growth and, because of that the growing mass of labor force, which is part of the “religious” productive population, should be constantly taken into account. So, the factor of religiosity in the management of human resources should be considered. At the same time, modern society is religiously heterogeneous, which is caused by migration processes. They have lasted for many centuries and have always contained a religious component in their structure. Long-term migration led to the formation of a religiously heterogeneous society and, accordingly, religiously heterogeneous personnel of organizations. In cross-cultural management at the micro level, two approaches to the management of cultural diversity can be distinguished. The first is focused on individual acculturation, the second – on the consideration of religious characteristics and satisfaction of the workers’ related needs. These needs are associated with food bans, restrictions in the mode of work, requirements for appearance, ritual aspects of life, moral attitudes, and labor motivation. Accordingly, modern management requires the formation of intercultural competencies of managers. Such competencies will make it possible to create a favorable microclimate in the organization, improve mutual understanding and interaction between employees, and form their loyalty to the employer company. As a result of interaction of employees, an organizational culture is created, and their positive religious and labor installations will help to create a productive environment. Managing of cultural diversity within one organization requires thespecial training for managers, so they can meet with different cultures and understand them well. Therefore, it is important to include in the students’ education program a block of cultural disciplines, among which there should be a religious study.
