T. O. Kozlova Actualization of the quantitative principle of iconicity by reduplicated pronouns with delimitative meaning

https://doi.org/10.31174/SEND-Ph2019-212VII63-05

Abstract. The article is a case study that examines form-meaning correlation in Ilocano reduplicated personal pronouns with delimitative meaning. It is argued that in spite of being opaque, the iconic quantitative principle ‘more form — more meaning’ is successfully performed by reduplicated delimitative pronouns due to their cumulative semantic feature. When reduplication is used to express the delimitative meaning, as in Illocano pronouns, it plays a significant function of emphasis. The fact that the delimitative meaning highlights ‘the completeness’ of the addresser’s deictic sphere proves the efficiency of reduplication in encoding the sense ‘completeness of the subject of the action’.
