O. Baranovska Emotive Verbs in English Sentiment Lexicons

https://doi.org/10.31174/SEND-HS2020-230VIII38-01

Abstract. The paper focuses on the representation of verbs in the existing sentiment lexicons of English. Sentiment lexicons are indispensable parts of sentiment analysis electronic tools. Though they contain a relatively small number of verbs in comparison with nouns or adjectives, still the occurrence of emotionally charged predicates in speech is a powerful sentiment marker. Thus, it is worthwhile comparing the verbs in the lexicons in order to discover the similarities and divergences across the lexicons and estimate the resources’ performance based on the ‘quality’ of their verb content.

Keywords: sentiment lexicon, sentiment (emotive) verbs, sentiment analysis, polarity, connotation.

The conducted research allowed to practically substantiate the conceptual role of the myth in the work, to determine the linguistic means of its individual-authorial interpretation. The text contains numerous reminiscences and allusions to mythological and biblical themes. Mythological intertext is realized in the work using mythologists and mythonyms, which, in turn, imply numerous textual concepts. It is established that the conceptual space of the novel «Le Papillon des étoiles» is characterized by the implication of concepts antonymous in its meaning, which is presented in the work as double gestalt concepts GOOD / EVIL, GOD / DEVIL, PARADISE, HELL, BIRTH / DEATH.

I. Livytska Linguistic Potential of Biosemiotics in Sign Systems Research

https://doi.org/10.31174/SEND-HS2020-230VIII38-08

Abstract.  The  paper  outlines the  emergence  of biosemiotics  (global  semiotics,  cyber  semiotics)  a  new  scientific  approach,  which appeared in the result of transformation in the scientific paradigms at the end of the XX century and the beginning of the XXI century. The author also highlights the reasons for such emergence and the potential of biosemiotics in analyzing autopoietic sign systems. The essence of biosemiotics as a science of organic sign systems and its status in the humanitarian knowledge paradigm has been defined. Application of analytical and interpretative methods, in combination with the historical approach allowed to trace a chronology of biosemiotics formation as well as its modern state of the art. It has been contended, due to a synergy of biology and semiotics, philosophy, and ethics, modern sign theory broadened its focus to the research in all alive sign systems (Thomas A. Sebeok, 2000) and acquired a new name “biosemiotics”. The prospects of future research lie in applying methods of biosemiotics to narrative discourse analysis.

M. Olkhovych-Novosadiuk The conceptosphere JOY in paremia of the English, Ukrainian and Polish languages

https://doi.org/10.31174/SEND-HS2020-230VIII38-10

Abstract. Emotions have many aspects, which include feelings and experience, physiology and behaviour, cognitions and concepualisations. Therefore the language of emotions constitutes an exciting research domain in its own right. The article outlines the results of the study of the emotion conceptosphere JOY based on the material of paremia with the key words joy / радість / radość and their derivatives of the English, Ukrainian and Polish languages. The data were drawn from the most authoritative phraseological diction- aries and dictionaries of proverbs and sayings of the three studied languages. The main aim of the research is to analyse the concep- tosphere JOY and identify the cultural scripts and scenarios inscribed and encoded in paremia of the English, Ukrainian and Polish linguacultures. The  research  is  conducted  using  the  method  of  conceptual  analysis  which  is  considered  to  be the  basic  method  of logical analysis of language and cognitive linguistics. The relevance of the research is justified by the integrative cognitive-linguistic- cultural approach to the investigation of the structure and linguistic realization of the emotion conceptosphere JOY in paremia of the Ukrainian, Polish and English languages. It seems important and timely to research the conceptualisation of joy with a view to its affiliation to basic emotions and insufficient level of the research by domestic and foreign linguists. Paremia is a linguistic fixation of scripts inherent in a particular linguaculture. Proverbs and sayings are one of the oldest genres of oral folk art. For many centuries, they have shown the ability of people to select and comprehend the most characteristic and typical aspects of the natural phenomena, work, everyday life as well as family and social life. As a result, paremia have become the repository of centuries-old life experience, relationships between people and between man and the environment. Analysis of proverbs and sayings of the English, Ukrainian and Polish linguacultures with the key words joy / радість / radość and their derivatives allowed to identify their main thematic groups. First, the  most numerous group of proverbs is with the binary opposition joy – sorrow. Second, there are paremia which describe outward expressions of the emotion including facial expression, behavioral and physical responses. People usually freely and often excessively express their joy but sometimes the emotion can be controlled, repressed or even hidden. Also, there are paremia which characterise the emotion of joy by various parameters (duration, intensity, expectancy, sincerity etc.). In some paremia joy is related to the specific periods of human life such as childhood, youth and in contrast old age. Moreover, for all the studied cultures the important feature is that the emotion of joy plays a significant role in relationships between people, in particular, to experience or share joy with others. Finally, there are proverbs and sayings which describe the causes of the emotion of joy such as life, family, home, faith in God, different activities, nature, beatiful things etc. The investigation of the emotion conceptosphere JOY is not complete. Further prospects of the research include obtaining and analyzing the data from associative dictionaries as well as from various textu- al discourses of the English, Ukrainian and Polish languages.
